Characteristics
Walnut is a medium-hard hardwood that machines easily and takes sanding, lacquer and oil very well. The heartwood ranges from light brown to dark chocolate; the outer sapwood is lighter. Properly dried, it stays dimensionally stable, which makes it a safe choice for solid furniture.
Edged and unedged walnut
- Edged walnut: boards with sawn, straight edges, ready to machine.
- Unedged walnut: boards that keep the natural edge of the log, chosen for live-edge table tops and to get the widest possible pieces.
