What is doussié?
Doussié is the trade name of Afzelia species from West, Central and East Africa, also sold as afzelia and papao. The African Afzelia species are listed in CITES Appendix II, so they are imported and traded with CITES documents.
Characteristics
Freshly cut heartwood is a yellowish honey colour that darkens to red-brown in light; the sapwood is clearly lighter. It has a coarse texture and a straight to slightly interlocked grain, at about 800 kg/m³. Its key quality is stability: once dry it moves very little with changes in humidity, which makes it a safe choice for large floors and joinery.
Durability
Very durable against fungi (class 1) and durable against termites and insects; long-lasting outdoors and near water.
