Is dibetou the same as African walnut?
Yes. The lumber traded as African walnut is Lovoa trichilioides, sold under the trade name dibetou. It grows in the tropical forests of West and Central Africa. It is named for its walnut-like colour and grain, but botanically it is not a true walnut (Juglans); it belongs to the mahogany family.
Characteristics
The heartwood ranges from golden brown to a dark walnut tone, sometimes with dark streaks. The grain is often interlocked, giving a ribbon figure on quarter-sawn faces. It is of medium density, machines easily, sands well and finishes nicely with lacquer, oil or varnish.
