What is wenge?
Wenge is the trade name of Millettia laurentii from the Congo Basin, known as awoung in Cameroon; the related East African panga panga looks very similar.
Characteristics
The heartwood ranges from dark brown to near black, with a striking figure of alternating light and dark bands. It has a straight grain and an even, coarse-looking texture, at about 870 kg/m³. It is hard and heavy and tends to splinter when worked, so gloves are recommended; its large pores need a grain filler for a smooth finish.
Durability
Durable against fungi, termites and insects.
