What is tali?
Tali is the trade name of Erythrophleum species from West and Central Africa, also sold as missanda and elondo.
Characteristics
The heartwood ranges from orange-brown to red-brown and darkens over time; the sapwood is clearly lighter. It has a coarse texture and a markedly interlocked grain. At about 910 kg/m³ it is heavy and hard with high mechanical strength, and once dry it is moderately to fairly stable. Because of its hardness it needs sharp tools and pre-drilling for screws.
Durability
Very durable against fungi (class 1) and durable against termites and insects; it lasts for many years even in contact with ground and water.
Where is it used?
- Decking and jetties
- Industrial and heavy-duty flooring
- Bridges and outdoor structures
- Sleepers, piles and hydraulic works
